Beyond the Portfolio: Designing Eddy, My UX-Driven Virtual Assistant

Most designers treat a portfolio’s contact page as a static dead end. It usually sits there, waiting passively for a user to fill out a cold form. However, I believe every interaction is a chance to showcase an approach. Consequently, I transformed my “contact me” section into a dynamic experience that blends design, automation, and personality.
The Genesis of Eddy: Giving a Face to the Workflow
I didn’t build Eddy just to automate my calendar. Instead, I wanted to bridge the gap between my professional skills and a visitor’s curiosity. My goal was to create a system that could qualify inquiries and simplify bookings. Furthermore, I wanted to leave a positive impression even on those just passing through.
I chose Typebot for the interface because it handles complex logic without sacrificing visual clarity. Eddy isn’t a typical chatbot firing off generic questions. On the contrary, I programmed him to be discreet and speak with my specific tone of voice.

The Technical Architecture: An Invisible Ecosystem
Seamless integration makes the entire system work. Rather than relying on closed solutions, I built a network of tools that talk to each other in real-time. For instance, when a user interacts with Eddy, the system organizes the data instantly in Google Sheets. This gives me a clean database to manage leads efficiently.
Cal.com handles the heart of the conversion process. I chose this tool because it offers total control over calendar sync and Google Meet room creation. As a result, the process is entirely “zero friction.” A user picks a time, receives a link, and the appointment appears in my calendar automatically.

Privacy by Design: Navigating GDPR in the DACH Region
Working in Vienna means that GDPR compliance is a top priority, not an afterthought. Since integrating a virtual assistant involves personal data, I had to align design with legal responsibility. Therefore, I implemented a proactive script-blocking system via CookieYes. This ensures that no cookies load before the user gives explicit consent.
Moreover, I updated my Privacy Policy to be fully transparent. I mapped and described every tool to ensure the experience is secure and fluid. While this step feels less creative, it is fundamental for building trust with European clients.
The Human Touch: The Entertainment Section
The real highlight of this project is the “Playground.” After the formal conversation ends, Eddy invites the user to take a break. He uses a quick “this or that” game to redirect visitors to my gaming or reading sections.
This strategic detour humanizes my profile. A senior designer is more than just a set of technical skills; they are individuals with passions. By leading users to my blog or gaming interests, I transform a professional transaction into a personal connection. This approach successfully increases dwell time and engagement.
Automation as an Extension of the Brand
Designing Eddy taught me that automation doesn’t have to feel cold. When you treat it as a design product, it becomes an extension of your personality. Today, my website is no longer just a gallery of past projects. Instead, it is an active tool that welcomes visitors and tells my story even when I am away from my desk.
